That’s why when the sun sets on Wilson Creek Winery’s summer concert series with David Garfield, Saturday, October 22, proceeds of the concert will be donated to radio station 94.7- The Wave’s Katrina/Rita relief fund.
Garfield, with a long career as a musical director, arranger, composer and producer, has scored and recorded for films ('Annie' and 'Always' with J.D. Souther), Television ('Fame' and its five accompanying 'Kids from Fame' recordings), and commercials (Coca Cola, McDonald's, and Seven-Up).
Along with his active recording career he toured with Earl Klugh, Michael McDonald, Nancy Wilson, Oleta Adams/Luther Vandross, Brenda Russell and many local L.A. acts and has been the musical director for George Benson and Dianne Reeves. He also appeared on The Tonight Show, Arsenio Hall and Solid Gold, and has composed and recorded more than 200 original compositions.
As if that array of challenges weren't enough to satisfy his creative urges, Garfield has led several popular bands rock/jazz/funk/world beat fusion bands in Los Angeles since his arrival in the mid-70s. The first of these was Karizma, which he formed with top session players Carlos Vega, Lenny Castro, Mike Landau and Jimmy Johnson. Karizma played sold out club dates in L.A. for years and released four albums ('Dream Come True', 'Cuba,' 'All The Way Live,' and 'Arms of Love') to great success in Japan, Australia and throughout Europe. At one point, Karizma, which still regroups every so often, also toured extensively, including dates with Sadao Watanabe, Jeff Lorber and the Yellowjackets.
David’s access to top studio musicians and state of the art equipment led him to start his own production company, Creatchy Productions. His Creatchy Records label soon followed. His first international release on Creatchy, “Tribute to Jeff”, featured 78 musicians and artists, including Don Henley, Eddie Van Halen, Michael McDonald, and Richard Marx, a virtual who’s who of the music industry. Critically acclaimed worldwide, this project reached the top ten charts in Japan (Pop) and the U.S. (NAC). David quickly followed up “Tribute to Jeff” with “I Am The Cat…Man,” which has also received critical success around the globe.
Saxophonist Steve Cole will open the Sunset Jazz in the Vines Concert at 7 p.m. Cole is proof that it is never too late to learn to play an instrument. On his latest album he wanted to conceptualize his composition on a new instrument – the guitar. So he taught himself the instrument and brought in guitarists David Hiltebrand (also his writing partner) Tim Pierce and Michael Thompson. Ricky Peterson joins in on organ and Todd Sucherrman on drums to create an organic soft pop instrumental collection with a # 3 hit single “Thursday” on the smooth jazz charts.
This is the final concert in the monthly Sunset Jazz in the Vines Series and promises to be a sellout.
