Old Town Temecula Painted Parasol Festival

Here's an event the entire family can enjoy from kids to grand parents. The Painted Parasol Blues Festival, April 22 in Old Town gifts children and adults the opportunity to paint their own parasols, then parade them around Old Town Temecula as they listen to both Jazz and Blues
bands playing throughout the day.

The festival includes the electrifying performance of Teresa Russell and the Cocabillis, Cajun blues from the Bayou Brothers and the award-winning rockin' blues of Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz on the blues stage, plus jazz from several high school bands on the jazz stage.

Titled Painted Parasol because painted parasols adorn the stages, the event also includes an artistic component where children paint their colorful parasols (umbrellas) to take home. The Children’s Imagination Workshop sponsors the activity from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. while supplies last. Cost is $4 and includes the parasol and paints. The Museum is located at 42081 Main Street throughout the day.

The Blues Stage at Third and Front Streets opens at 11 a.m. with the
Musicians Workshop Blues Band. The Bayou Brothers kick up Cajun style at 1 p.m. p.m. with the Bayou Brothers. San Diego’s favorite Zydeco Band, the Bayou Brothers blend New Orleans Blues, Cajun tunes, and southern bayou sounds with their guitar, keyboard, accordion, bass and drums.

Teresa Russell and the Cocabillis fire things up at 3 p.m. with a mixture of Russell's signature vocals and raging guitar solos, backed up by virtuosos Coco Roussel on drums and Billi Breland on bass.  Russell has been compared to Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge combining a rock-hard edge with sultry warmth for a unique vocal style. She toured with Helen Reddy throughout the 1980s until she went on her own to develop her own rocking blues sound. Coco Roussel came to the USA in 1980 from Paris, France. Establishing residence in Washington, D.C., he performed with such acts as Clearlight Symphony, Happy the Man,
Michael Manring, and David Arkenstone. Bassist Breland is from the Mississippi Delta and has toured, recorded, and performed on live TV and radio with such artists as Helen Reddy, Alan Thicke, and jazz group, Pocket Change. He produced the top-40 Euro hit, Tear Down The Wall, for Joe Esposito.

Aunt Kizzy'z Boyz recently represented San Diego in the International Blues Competition in Memphis Tennessee where they placed second in the nation. They had taken the San Diego title after several rounds of competition last summer and fall.  AKB closes out the Blues stage at 5 p.m.A high energy band led by Jimmy King on guitar and vocals, the band is known for packing Old Town’s streets with dancing. Lead singer Sugaray belts out soulful tunes with style. He’s shared the stage in the past with The Average White Band, Kal David, and Joe Luis Walker & Dennis Quaid. Dwane Hathorn on drums and percussion grew up listening to blues and big band music. He has performed with Chubby Jackson, Bob Boss and Marshall Hawkins of the Miles Davis band.

Johnny Neal on keyboards and vocal has opened for such acts as Three Dog Night, Steppenwolf, and the Shirelles. The band is complete with Brayde B. who has worked with a variety of blues bands including “For Sale Band and “Johnny Neal and the Bluesprint.

Included in the jazz line up are: Temecula Valley High School Jazz Ensemble, Valley Winds, Vail Ranch Middle School and the Mt. San Jacinto Menifee Campus Jazz Ensemble. Jazz performances start at 10 a.m. at the Calico Coffee Stage on Front Street at Main.
