Honoring the spirit of the man for whom the Ronald Reagan Sports Park was named, the Friends of the Ronald Reagan Sports Park will hold a “Celebrate the Spirit” event at Ronald Reagan Sports Park on “Can-Do Day,” Friday, March 3.
The free event starts at 3 p.m., at the picnic area of the Temecula park. The event will also honor the volunteers of the area got the Sports Park built without government funds.
“It is designed to be upbeat, entertaining and educational,” says Perry Peters, who will emcee the event.
Invitations have gone out to known participants in the construction of the original sports park, and to schools in the Temecula Valley Unified School District, urging them to present their own examples of individuals or groups that exhibited the Can-Do spirit.
The day will feature patriotic songs performed by members of the Temecula Valley High School band under the direction of Anthony Scarcella, and a Fifth Grade Band under the direction of Jeanine Dinger. The latter is sponsored
by the Kiwanis Club of Temecula/Murrieta. The Classical Choir of Temecula Prep, directed by Noel Catiller, also has agreed to participate.
Mayor Ron Roberts is scheduled to present a City of Temecula edict, proclaiming
Can-Do Day, marking the anniversary: of the day in 1983, when the former President Reagan, in a speech before the U.S. Olympic Committee, praised the people “in a small town, Temecula, “ for their typical American spirit. Last year, on the same date, the park was officially named after Reagan.
Honorary Chair of the event is City Council Member Mike Naggar, who, as Mayor in 2004, spearheaded the movement to name the park after the former President. He will explain why he asked for the name change. The park previously was called Rancho California Sports Park.
Other individuals honoring the Can-Do Day at the Ronald Reagan Sports Park will be City Council Member Maryann Edwards, Jeff Minkler, vice president of Friends of Ronald Reagan SP and one of the original Sports Park Committee Members, and Supervisor Jeff Stone.
The monument, with the same theme as the purpose of the celebration, is to be built at the sports park once funds have been raised. Christopher Pardell, the Fallbrook sculptor who designed the proposed monument, also will speak and “unveil” the site sign that will illustrate his design and mark the place where the monument is to be built.
Friends of Ronald Reagan SP is the 501(c)(3) non-profit, all-volunteer organization sponsoring the event. Peters is president of the group. More information about Friends of Ronald Reagan and the Can-Do Club appear on the website: RonaldReaganSportsPark.com.
