The 2005 Inland Empire Race for the Cure brought out 8732 runners and walkers, 521 survivors, 649 volunteers, along with family and friends on a beautiful Sunday morning in support of the fight against breast cancer. Thanks to the help from Sponsors such as The Ralph’s Food 4 Less Foundation, Albertsons Sav-On, generous facilities provided by The Promenade in Temecula and many local and national sponsors, The Race for the Cure was able to raise over 1.2 million dollars in sponsor cash and in-kind donations. Putting that with the money raised from participant entries and pledges raised so far brings the total dollars raised to over 1.5 million! These funds will be put to good use in the mission to eradicate beast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment.
Out of the 187 teams that participated, Pechanga Resort and Casino was the largest team with 320 team members participating in the race. Team Cindy won the honor of raising the most money by bringing in $15,566 in pledge donations to date. The Peoples Choice winner for the team T-shirt Contest was the Murrieta Police Department and the Chairs Choice was given to Team Serta for their “Sheep in for the Cure” design.
In the timed 5k race the overall winners for the survivors were: Cheryl Anne St. John, Jacqueline Mann, and Robin Shannon. The youngest survivor to finish the race was Stephanie Griffith who is 25 years old and the oldest survivor to finish the race was Kalypso Constantinidou who is 87 years young. Overall female winner in the timed race was Kristin Farmer and the overall male winner was Ian Iverson who generously donated his purse prize of $250 back to The Race for the Cure. In addition to all of the great energy on the race course there were many activities for the entire family in the expo where Lowes had a special booth for kids to plant and build for the cure. Activities as diverse as rock climbing, massages and hair cuts were all available in the expo where sponsors and vendors came out in the early morning to support the race and provide great gifts and goodies to all of the participants.
The most successful race to date!! The 2006 Race for the Cure will be October 15, 2006.
